If you want beautiful flowers for the garden, tulips should be on your list. Tulips comes in many shapes and sizes and with their colors, they are sure to make any garden come to life. Tulips are one of the those flowers where extra care and attention is needed to grow.

To have a beautiful tulips, it all start with the tulip bulbs. The type and condition of the bulb will determine the outcome of the flowers when it finally grow. When choosing a bulb, pick one that are large in size, with no sign of cracks or rotting on the outside of the bulb. Also, make sure that they are firm and do not have any cuts, bruises, or mold. If you are planning to buy them from the local store or nursery, it is best to buy them early in the season. If you buy them late in the season, most of the quality bulbs are already taken.

Unlike most flowers, tulips needs to be planted in late fall or early winter. There are some steps to take before planting them to ensure they will grow properly in the spring. The most important step is to freeze the bulbs for six to eight weeks before planting them. Doing so will ensure a smooth transfer to the ground and also prevent the bulbs from heating up to quickly, which can destroy them.

Once you are ready to plant them, first make sure the ground is loose and mix the soil with fertilizer. Fertilizer for tulips is nothing more than compost, peat moss, and meal bone. These things help promote the growth of the tulips. The depth to plant the bulbs depend on the soil, but four to six inches is the ideal depth for growing tulips. When placing the bulbs in the ground, make sure the bulbs end is facing downward. The recommended spacing to plant them are six inches apart. After you finish planting them, water the ground until the soil settle around the bulbs. After this, there is no need to water them anymore until they are ready to grow in the spring.

Planting tulips is not hard as it seem. By following some of the tips above, there should be no reason why you should have unhealthy tulips in the spring. Once the spring season start and these beautiful flowers start to grow, it will fill your whole garden with colorful flowers.
